The classification of the information in a dictionary into categories for data processing is nothing new. But the present study has both a broader and a deeper aim. We generalize the categories into a taxonomy meant to cover many very different types of dictionary, and we test the taxonomy as a descriptive apparatus on radically different types of dictionary. We also attempt to formalize and standardize the format description thoroughly and consistently. We detail how the formalized description can be used to process data from a printed dictionary; and we demonstrate how dictionary data, once described and structured, can be recorded and stored in a computer, and finally we also discuss the demands that one must make as a lexicographer on software for the processing of lexicographical data.
