This book examines syllable structure, syllabification and phonological processes sensitive to syllable structure in Modern Standard German. A specific model of subsyllabic structure and an explicit algorithm for the assignment of this structure are proposed and applied to certain well-known areas of German phonology. This study operates within a version of Lexical Phonology where the lexicon is composed of a morphological component and cyclic and postcyclic phonological rules.
