This book deals with two core questions in syntax: ›What kind of sequences qualify for sentencehood in German?‹ and ›What kind of information ought to be provided by syntactic analysis in order to be able to derive sentence meaning?‹. The guiding principle for the answers is the view that syntax is there for the sake of semantics – a view which fits in with the general cognitive outlook of the book. Numerous examples of written und spoken language serve as illustration.
