Dieses Buch analysiert die Nutzung von Wortbeispielen, die Noah Webster und Samuel Johnson in ihren Wörterbüchern als ein Mittel der Anleitung für einen Wortgebrauch einsetzen. Diese Analyse offenbart, dass Johnsons Quellenauswahl für Zitate und die Häufigkeit des Zitierens in Abhängigkeit von dem eingegebenen Wort stark variieren. Im Gegensatz dazu wurden fast alle Webster-Zitate aus Johnsons "Dictionary" entnommen. Jedoch nutzte Webster diese Zitate bezeichnenderweise voll aus, um sein Verständnis eines Wortgebrauchs, das wesentlich von dem Johnsons abweicht, zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
